A2P 10DLC for Sole Proprietors: How to Register for Business Texting Without an EIN

No EIN? You can still register for business texting as a sole proprietor. Here's who qualifies, the limits nobody mentions, the verification text you can't miss, and how long it takes.

If you run your business under your own name, without an EIN, you can still register for business texting. The carriers have a separate path for exactly your situation: the sole proprietor registration.

It's simpler than the standard business registration in some ways and stricter in others. Most guides skip the parts that trip people up, so here's the whole picture.

Who Qualifies as a Sole Proprietor (for A2P)

For A2P 10DLC purposes, "sole proprietor" has a narrower meaning than you might expect: a business with no tax ID at all. In the US, that means no EIN. In Canada, no Business Number.

That rules out more people than you'd think:

  • Every LLC has an EIN, even a single-member LLC, so LLCs can't use the sole proprietor path. If you have an LLC, you register as a standard business, which is a good thing. It's faster and has fewer limits.
  • If you have an EIN for any reason, even one you got years ago for a side business, you're expected to register with it. Registering as a sole proprietor when an EIN exists under your name is a common cause of unexplained rejections.

If you truly have no EIN (you file business income on your personal return under your SSN), the sole proprietor path is for you.

What You'll Need

  • Your full legal name. The registration is for you as a person, so it should match your ID.
  • Your home or business address.
  • An email address. Use one you check, since you'll get updates there.
  • A mobile phone number that can receive a verification text. This is the most important item on the list, for reasons covered below.
  • The business phone number you'll text from.
  • A website with a privacy policy, SMS terms, and an opt-in form. Sole proprietors are held to the same website standards as everyone else. See the A2P website checklist.
  • A short description of what you'll text customers about, and a couple of sample messages.

The Verification Text (Don't Miss It)

This is the step that's unique to sole proprietors, and the single most common reason a sole-prop registration stalls.

After your registration is submitted, a one-time verification text is sent to your mobile number. You have to reply to confirm it. Until you do, nothing else happens. Your brand sits half-approved and your campaign can't be reviewed.

We've seen sole-prop registrations sit untouched for weeks because the verification text looked like spam and got ignored. When you submit, watch your phone and answer it right away.

The Limits Nobody Mentions

Sole proprietor registrations come with real restrictions. They're fine for most one-person businesses, but you should know them going in.

One campaign, one phone number. A sole proprietor registration covers exactly one business phone number. If you add a second number later, it won't be able to text until it's registered separately.

Your verification mobile can only be used three times, ever. The mobile number that gets the verification text can only be used for three A2P registrations total, across every provider. If you've registered with other apps before, or used the same number to register someone else's business, it may already be used up. That causes a rejection (error 30750). The fix is to use a different mobile number that hasn't been used for registrations.

Lower sending limits. Sole proprietor campaigns get the lowest daily volume allowance. That's plenty for texting customers one at a time: quotes, scheduling, follow-ups. It's not built for blasting a large list.

A slower campaign review. Sole-prop campaigns get a more manual review than standard business campaigns. In our recent registrations, sole-prop campaigns took about two to three days to approve, versus a few hours for businesses with an EIN.

How Long It Takes

From our most recent sole proprietor registrations:

StepTypical time
Brand registrationMinutes after you reply to the verification text
Campaign reviewAbout 2–3 days
Total, if nothing is rejectedAbout 2–4 days

The variable you control is the verification text. Reply in five minutes and you're on the fast end; ignore it for a week and you've added a week. For the full picture, including standard business registrations, see how long A2P approval actually takes.

Should You Get an EIN Instead?

Maybe. An EIN is free from the IRS, and the online application takes a few minutes. Registering as a standard business with an EIN gets you faster reviews, higher sending limits, and more than one number.

A few caveats:

  • Brand-new EINs can take time to show up in the databases reviewers check, so a registration filed the same week you get your EIN may not verify right away.
  • The business name must match the EIN exactly. If you apply for an EIN under a business name, register under that exact name.
  • Don't get an EIN just for texting if it complicates your taxes. Talk to whoever does your taxes first. The sole proprietor path works fine for most solo operators.

Common Sole-Prop Rejections

  • An EIN exists under your name. Register as a standard business with it instead.
  • The verification mobile was already used three times (error 30750). Use a different mobile number.
  • Website problems (errors 30908, 30909, 30919). No privacy policy, no opt-in form, or a site that doesn't match the registration.
  • The business description doesn't match the samples. Say what you'll actually text, and make the samples look like real messages.

More detail on each code is in A2P rejection fixes by error code.

How Reach Handles It

Plenty of the solo operators who sign up for Reach have no EIN, so the sole proprietor path is one we file regularly. You fill out a short intake in the app. We figure out which registration path fits, build you a compliant website if you need one, and file the registration. Then we tell you when to expect the verification text. The fees are covered by your plan, and if anything comes back rejected, we fix it.
