About the 604 area code
Area code 604 covers Vancouver, British Columbia and the Lower Mainland, including Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, the North Shore, and the Fraser Valley out to Hope. It was BC's original area code, assigned in 1947, and served the entire province until 250 took the interior and Vancouver Island in 1996. Locals regard 604 as the classic Vancouver number, the one that predates the overlays and marks a business as established in the region.
A business with a 604 number reads as a Lower Mainland operation to customers in Vancouver, Surrey, and the suburbs, and it gets answered more readily than an out-of-province number. The overlays 778, 236, and 672 cover the same territory and are also seen as local, but 604 is the code people associate with longtime Vancouver businesses. Whether you are a contractor in Langley or a consultant downtown, it fits the market.
